To use MoviePlayer to prepare a movie so it can start playing before being completely downloaded:

You'll need to be running QuickTime 2.5 (which you can get from Apple).

  1. Open the movie

  2. Choose Save As from the File menu.

  3. Select "Make movie self-contained" and "Playable on non-apple computers."

  4. Click the Save button

Important data ("metadata") will be moved to the front of the file, which is what allows the movies to start playing before being completely downloaded. Movies with the metadata in the front of the file are sometimes referred to as "fast-start" movies.

  1. If you want the movie to start playing automatically, you'll need to set autoplay = true in the embed tag in your html code. If you don't, your users can start playing the movie once a sufficient amount has been downloaded, but the movie won't start playing by itself.

Movies that were saved this way prior to QuickTime 2.5 need to be saved this way again under QuickTime 2.5.
