To use MoviePlayer to trim away unwanted portions of a movie:
- Open any movie.
- Select any portion of it by holding down the shift key and dragging the slider
(also called the playbar thumb.)

- Hold down the option key and choose Trim from the Edit menu. The portions of
the movie outside the selection will be deleted.
- When you save your movie, make sure to choose "Make movie self-contained",
otherwise the data will actually stay in the movie file, though it's not visible.
